Perfect planning isn’t needed for SharePoint 2010, just flexible thinking!

Perfect planning isn’t needed for SharePoint 2010, just flexible thinking!

Last week I attended a training course in the middle of the British countryside along with several network administrators who were all looking to deploy SharePoint 2010 in the not so distant future. Over the course of the week there was a lot of great discussion ranging from the technical side of what disk arrays to use in order to have high availability; to high level debates around what SharePoint Services should be deployed to meet the business requirements. There was a general theme of the week and it wasn’t the beer that the bar was serving, but how to effectively plan a system that could quickly take off and snowball.

SharePoint 2010 certainly provides the ability to scale, allowing you to build an architecture that has the potential to keep expanding without the need for system admins to panic and migrate to new kit. New services like FAST Search, Excel Services, and managed metadata can be added at a later date with no serious impact to the current implementation.
