In a recent webinar with KM World – Taking Information Governance to the Next Level – I urged knowledge managers to rethink governance as a competitive weapon in today’s digital business environment.
Taking a modern approach to information governance (ahead of your competition) by ensuring that the right information is made available to the right workers at the right time can make them more productive and highly responsive to customers anytime, anywhere. In this way, information governance can become a differentiating advantage.
Gartner defines information governance as the specification of the decision rights of how people are to use information and accountability for how they’re dealing with that information … to govern the valuation, creation, storage, usage, archiving and deletion of information. That is certainly a traditional view. Gartner continues to explain that governance can also drive business performance – “it includes ensuring the effective and efficient use of information in enabling an organization to achieve its goals.”
So in fact, information governance can be quite often a competitive weapon and something that’s utilized to help an organization get to the next level. It’s not just about regulatory compliance anymore.
