Can’t I set up an ad hoc network myself? Why do I need Workgroup?
Have you tried setting up your own ad hoc network? Your Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer would be able to. Workgroup has simplified the numerous tasks to a single click that adds security and common applications to make it easy for mobile professionals to focus on their tasks not their computers. Workgroup allows you to discover, connect, and interact with other users in a familiar and easy to use interface. With a quick glance you can determine who is available and who is not, you can quickly and easily exchange information and files, share resources such as folders and printers, and coordinate meetings by sharing free time slots in your Outlook calendar. No re-configuring of network cards, IP addresses, nor making sure your team members’ computers can communicate.
What about security?
Workgroup supports encrypted transmission with built-in SSL security ensures the same high level security as Internet banking. In addition, Workgroup’s patented authentication technology uses x509 certificates, protecting you from “man in the middle attacks.” Finally, Workgroup interactions are computer-to-computer rather than server-based, with fewer points of connection for hackers to attack.
What is the distance range of a wireless network using Workgroup?
Workgroup relies on WiFi technology (802.11b wireless networking) to discover, connect, and interact with other users. WiFi networking has an approximate range of up to 100 meters (328 feet). The range is dependent upon the actual WiFi network card and the environment in which you are using it. Environmental factors include walls and electrical interference such as cordless phones and microwaves, which can interfere and shorten the distance.
